Singapore gets first casino

8 Feb 2007

Travellers planning a holiday in Singapore will soon be able to visit the country's first casino.

Construction work has begun on the site, which officials hope will prove to be a huge attraction for foreign visitors.

The casino is costing S$5bln (£1.6bln) to establish and will be located in the Marina Bay area in the south of the country.

This latest development is soon to be followed by another casino resort on the island of Sentosa and signals a change in attitude from the Singaporean government.

'We are prepared to change, to take risks, and to reach consensus on a difficult decision," said the minister for national development Mah Bow Tan.

'The two resorts will serve as important engines of our leisure sector, creating spin-offs for the tourism industry and the overall economy.'

Authorities have chosen to introduce the casinos because they want Singapore to have a 'wow factor', which they feel is currently missing.

However, the country has always been hugely popular among tourists and this latest development is likely to add to its attraction as a holiday destination.
