Bringing sunshine to Switzerland

14 Feb 2007

A small mountain village in Switzerland will soon be basking in some reflected glory if plans for a giant mirror are approved.

Bondo, which lies deep in the Bregaglia Valley, is deprived of sunlight for three months every year, leaving its 198 residents in the dark.

However, this is all set to change with the installation of the mirror, which will track the path of the sun to bring light to Bondo, reports daily Swiss newspaper Suedostschweiz.

The village is currently in darkness during the months of December, January and February due to its positioning at the bottom of huge mountains.

It is hoped that the giant mirror will improve productivity in the village, as well as attracting many tourists.

'That would be added value for our town,' said Renzo Giovanoli, mayor of Bondo. 'We came to a consensus at the village assembly that the study of the project should be further assessed so that we can decide on it in the summer.'

The news follows the announcement by officials in the Italian village of Viganella which suffers a similar problem.

Officials there have now erected a mirror and the first reflected sunshine should hit the village on 17 February.
