Hand luggage restrictions may be postponed

16 Mar 2007

Plans to introduce restrictions on hand luggage within the European Union (EU) may be postponed.

It was originally agreed that size limitations would be introduced by early April but this may not materialise as a number of airlines are appealing for more time to prepare.

EU officials are now considering putting the date back to one around six months from now, although this has not been officially confirmed, reports Swedish news agency TT.

The restrictions will see a limit put on the size of an individual piece of hand luggage with all airlines within the EU.

Passengers will be unable to take any luggage past the check in which is larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm.

Authorities within the EU decided to bring in the restrictions following an alleged terrorist plot in the UK which was foiled by police.

As the postponement of the new rules has not yet been confirmed, passengers are advised to prepare for the rules to be introduced in April until a further statement from the EU is released.
