Israel strike is called off

22 Mar 2007

Israeli public sector workers have called off a strike which threatened to severely disrupt services at Tel Aviv airport.

The industrial action had threatened to affect thousands of English football fans who are travelling to the city this weekend ahead of the national team's European Championship qualifier against Israel.

Fears had been growing that many people would have been stranded once they arrived in the middle-east as the strike was set to cripple the country's state infrastructure, reports the Associated Press.

Up to 150,000 workers downed tools but fortunately the situation has been resolved.

Officials have been holding talks with unions and it has been agreed that wages which had been held back will now be paid and the strike will no go ahead.

'I am happy to announce that all the salaries will be paid today or tomorrow,' announced union chief Ofer Eini.

'After all our demands were met, I can announce the end of the general strike in Israel.'
