Lithuanian folklore festival 2007

29 Mar 2007

Lithuania is gearing up for an annual festival of folk music in its capital city.

Vilnius is preparing to host the 34th International Folklore Festival, with singers, groups and bands making their way to the region from across Europe and Asia.

A number of concerts have been planned around Vilnius, with the city's main squares the likely location for the biggest events, while smaller ones will be taking place in quieter areas.

The Lithuanian tourist board promises that tourists will be amazed by what they see during the event, with locals regularly surprised by the goings on as they vary so much in a bid to keep it fresh.

The main focus of the festival is a sense of family and belonging, with folk songs holding a big place in the hearts of Lithuanians.

Audiences are actively encouraged to interact with performers and group singing is commonplace.

Translated as Skamba skamba kankliai in Lithuanian, the 2007 festival runs from 23 May to 27 May.
