France fine dining made easier

2 Apr 2007

France's famed Michelin guides, which direct diners to the very best in haute cuisine, are to be produced in English for the first time.

Although the Michelin star system has crossed the channel, leading chefs such as Gordon Ramsay to pursue that elusive first or second star, the guides have always been published in French only for French restaurants.

Traditionally, the guide's authors have insisted that the symbols, including the star system, are enough of a 'universal language' to guide foreigners in France on where to eat.

But those hoping to get a better rounded picture of possible dining experiences before sampling the real thing can now refer to the English-language guide, which describes the 'ambiance and decor' for the first time.

Speciality dishes will also be outlined in tantalising detail, enabling diners to savour their meal in anticipation.

The guides will be sold in each of the 100 countries where Michelin guides are currently marketed.
