Posh Spice in buggy bedlam
2 Apr 2007
An umbrella group representing disabled people has criticised airport authorities at Heathrow for permitting Victoria Beckham to travel to her flight gate aboard a buggy.
The small internal transport vehicles are ordinarily reserved for people who are unable to walk to their destination.
The UK Disabled People's Council, which represents 80 disability rights groups, spoke out against the special treatment.
'Its absolutely awful that just because she is a star she believes she can get away with using something that someone else might need at that airport,' protested council chair Anne Pridmore.
But the star's spokespeople have insisted that the buggy was needed, since Mrs Beckham was being pursued by paparazzi.
Speaking in Mrs Beckham's defence, a Virgin Atlantic spokesperson insisted that, while 'disabled passengers take priority', the buggies are often used for other passengers.
'Families with young children, people with lots of luggage and even people who are late for their flights' are also eligible to use the buggies on occasion, spokeswoman Janine Donovan told the Independent.
