Holidaymakers go green in the Highlands
16 Apr 2007
Scottish tourist authorities are wooing green-thinking holidaymakers with a vow to become the world's first 'carbon neutral' holiday destination.
In a project backed by the EU, Travelife will rank tour operators and travel companies on how well they perform environmentally.
Gold, silver and bronze medals will help guide customers towards the best green performers.
VisitScotland is also currently running a Green Tourism Business Scheme which awards the 'green badge' to environmentally responsible tourist agencies.
It hopes to bind 1,000 companies in the sector to green practices by the end of 2007.
Customers are latching onto the idea, too, with VisitScotland reporting increased demand for its green holiday offers.
"We have anecdotal evidence that suggests more inquiries are being made and the green credentials of a hotel or B&B are important considerations for a growing number of environmentally responsible travellers," a spokeswoman told the Herald.
"They want to know the green credentials of a hotel or bed and breakfast before they book," she added, speaking to the Sunday Herald.
