Stansted extension ploughs ahead

17 Apr 2007

Construction work begins this week on a major project to extend the main terminal building at London's Stansted Airport.

The development programme will add an extra 5,900 square metres of floor space to the airport and cost £40 million, airport operator BAA said.

Travellers arriving from overseas are likely to welcome the introduction of an expanded area for baggage carousels, speeding up the process of getting out of the airport.

Meanwhile, family and friends come to welcome visitors or homecoming globetrotters will be accommodated in a new area for 'meeters and greeters', BAA announced.

Shopaholics will also be given the chance pick up last-minute cosmetics or presents for their hosts as they head abroad for a spell from a wider choice of shops in Departures.

"This significant investment will create additional space and facilities that will benefit both passengers and business partners," said BAA Stansted business development and planning director Nick Barton.

The airport now serves almost 24 million passengers a year.
