Tibet gets 5-star hotel

1 May 2007

Tibet is to get its first ever five-star hotel as the region experiences a surge in tourist numbers.

The capital Lhasa is to house the hotel which is being constructed by the Lhasa Yungao International Hotel Company and should be ready by the end of 2008.

Once construction is complete, the hotel will be officially named as the St Regis, Lhasa and room prices are set to be around £200 per night, reports the Xinhua news agency.

Tibet has become a popular tourist destination in recent times, with thousands of people now flocking to the region on a regular basis.

Much of the rise in popularity is put down to the building of the Qinghai-Tibet railway link.

The train links Tibet to the rest of China and began operating in July. Despite the boost this has given to tourism, many Tibetans were and still are unhappy with it being in place.

A large number of traditionalists fear that the rail link will lead to a dilution of the Tibetan way of life.
