Bindi Irwin wanted as face of Australian tourism

17 May 2007

Youngster Bindi Irwin has been voted as Australia's favourite face to front the country's tourism campaigns.

The eight-year-old daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, was selected above a host of celebrity names to become the face of Australian tourism.

The vote was not official, although Bindi is an official tourism ambassador for Australia, and Bindi is not being lined up for any adverts but it did offer a glimpse into how the Aussies would like to be represented.

In a reference to the controversial 'Where the bloody hell are you?' adverts used to promote Australia as a tourist destination, visitors to the TotalTravel website were asked 'Who the bloody hell do you think should be the face of Australian tourism?'

They were given a choice between Bert Newton, Shane Warne, Kath and Kim and Bindi, with the youngster running out clear winner with 38% of the vote.

Bindi is currently a bit of a star in Australia after she grabbed the hearts and minds of the world with a touching speech at her father's memorial service.

She has since developed her own TV career, appearing on hit US chat shows such as Larry King Live, releasing a fitness video called Bindi Kidfitness and filming wildlife series named Bindi the Jungle Girl.
