Great Wall of China conquered

17 May 2007

Two Britons have entered the record books by spending their holiday in China walking the entire length of the country's Great Wall.

Tarka L'Herpiniere and model Katie Cooper made the 3,000-mile trip and became the first people ever to do so.

Ms Cooper said that she wanted to prove to people that she could achieve the monumental feat despite having some doubters because of stereotypes surrounding models.

'As a model, Katie always been perceived as a blonde, useless bimbo who loves her make-up and high heels,' said Mr L'Herpiniere.

'She's very competitive and I think she wanted to prove there was a bit more substance to her than just her highlights.

'She left her make-up at home although she did carry a nail file, tweezers and some face cream,' he added.

The epic journey began in October in the desert of Yumenguan Pass. From there they climbed around 9,000 feet to reach the mountains before heading to Beijing.

It all came to an end when the pair reached North Korea and the end of the wall in April.

Along the way, Ms Cooper was struck down with an extreme case of gastroenteritis and Mr L'Herpiniere had to leave her alone in the desert while he called an ambulance.
