Heathrow to undergo more radical changes

1 Jun 2007

London's Heathrow airport looks set to undergo yet more drastic changes with the announcement that Terminals One and Two will be merged.

Subject to a legal agreement, planning permission has been given for the new terminal which organisers say will be environmentally sensitive.

The terminal will be known as Heathrow East and will bring together Terminal One and Terminal Two without increasing the capacity of Heathrow.

Officials at BAA claim that the new building will cut carbon emissions by 40 per cent by using less energy and generating its own renewable energy onsite.

'I'm delighted that we've got the green light for Heathrow East,' said Tony Douglas, chief executive officer at BAA Heathrow.

'This is great news for passengers. By June 2012, most of our passengers will be travelling through terminal facilities that aren't even open today and we will have either re-built or redeveloped all our other terminals. Heathrow will be like a new airport for London.'

It is hoped that the new building will be open in time for the London Olympics in 2012 and the plans are part of BAA's £6.2 billion investment strategy to make Heathrow the world's leading airport.
