Kansas Salt Museum sells out

1 Jun 2007

The Kansas Underground Salt Museum has had its first sell out day.

The attraction, which shows off a vast underground network of salt mines, has been open for preview tours since 1 May.

Visitors have come from all four corners of the world to visit the museum and officials say that it managed to attract the maximum number of visitors it can handle in one day.

Tourists are taken deep beneath the ground in a double-decker elevator and are then free to walk around various museums and exhibits.

There is also a gift shop and a tram which takes people on a tour known as the Dark Ride.

'It was a great feeling to have the elevator at full capacity on every tour. We took 532 people into the mine today,' said Linda Schmitt, executive director.

'Advance sales are strong going into the summer and we encourage everyone to book their tickets in advance so they're guaranteed a space on the elevator.

'While work is still underway, we're thrilled that we can offer the opportunity to go 650 feet below Hutchinson to experience the awe of the salt caverns formed 280 million years ago,' she added.
