QE2 to become Dubai hotel

18 Jun 2007

One of the world's most famous ocean liners is to be retired and permanently birthed in Dubai.

The QE2 has been sold to Dubai World, with plans to turn the famous vessel into a luxurious floating hotel.

The ship will be handed over to the firm in November when it will be docked at the world's largest man-made island Palm Jumeirah.

Dubai World bought the QE2 for £50.4m and plans to return the interior to the original fixtures and fittings that were present when it launched in 1967.

The liner is due to see millions of pounds invested into turning it into a luxury hotel and guests should be able to visit from 2009.

'QE2 is without a doubt one of the wonders of the maritime world and is easily the most famous serving liner in the world today,' said Dubai World's chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulavem.

'I am delighted we will be able to create a home for her on the newest wonder of the world, the Palm Jumeirah.'

The QE2 has had a distinguished career, serving 2.5m passengers, completing 25 world cruises and crossing the Atlantic 800 times.
