Regent Street to have Indian feel

20 Jun 2007

London is famous the world over for its diversity and, as if to prove that point, the city is hosting an India-themed festival.

The 2007 Regent Street Festival will highlight the flair, culture and magic of India, with the aim of emulating some of the vast festivals that take place in the Asian country.

Council officials have agreed to close the usually busy Regent Street to traffic for much of the day, giving revellers the chance to walk freely along the famous street.

Those who attend will be entertained by dancers, processions and a number of eye-catching displays, as well as a host of stalls which will sell traditional Indian food.

It is no coincidence that India has been chosen as the theme for the festival as 2% of the UK's population is Indian and the two cultures have very close links.

Regent Street is currently undergoing something of a change, with £500m being pumped into the area to revitalise it.

The 2007 Regent Street Festival, the eighth of its kind, will take place between 12:00 BST and 22:00 BST on 2 September.
