Extravagent island Carnival in St Lucia

28 Jun 2007

St Lucia's Carnival, the most extravagant event on the small Caribbean island's busy calendar will take place this year on 16 and 17 July in the country's capital, Castries.

Each year, a mass of colourfully costumed locals intermingle with the island's visitors, packing out the confetti-laden streets and parading to traditional calypso music.

The Calypso competition, which pits St Lucia's best performers against each other as they try to sing and dance their way to the highly coveted title of Calypso Monarch, is one of the many highlights of the festival season.

The carnival also features a beauty pageant and many musical acts, including some of the top soca performers from around the Caribbean as well as traditional steel bands.

Things really come to a head as revellers take things up a notch for Carnival Tuesday, the undoubted climax to and highlight of St Lucia's colourful festive season.
