Ocracoke Island named best beach in US

29 Jun 2007

Ocracoke Lifeguard Beach on Ocracoke Island, in the US state of North Carolina, has been named as the best beach in the country.

The beach took top spot in the 17th annual Top 10 Beaches awards and was chosen by Dr Stephen Leatherman, an international expert on beaches and coastlines.

More than 650 beaches throughout the country are judged on more than 50 different categories and it is the first time that a beach outside of Florida or Hawaii has won the prestigious award.

'The unmatched beauty of our coast has for decades been a favourite of visitors who truly wish to get away, to relax among the quiet natural shorelines, explore the native wildlife, meet unique people and hear the compelling stories of the Outer Banks,' said Mike Easley, governor of North Carolina.

Famed, for its clean water, fine sand and unspoilt natural beauty, the beach is 26 miles from North Carolina's mainland and is accessible by boat, ferry or plane.
