World's largest tomato fight in Spain

9 Jul 2007

Every year, nearly 30,000 people travel from around Europe to the small village of Bunyol, just outside of Valencia in Southern Spain, for La Tomatina, the largest tomato fight in the world.

On 29 August, more than 125,000 kg of ripe tomatoes are shipped into the village and participants have two hours to fling them at the thousands of enemy combatants that will fill the streets.

The battle commences as five tomato-filled rockets explode in the air after which participants literally paint the town red.

The only rules are that the tomatoes must be squished before hand and other projectiles are not allowed. Other than that, it is a mad red frenzy, where anything goes.

After the tomato-flavoured carnage comes to an end, everyone pitches in to restore the village to its former beauty. Shopkeepers remove their tarpaulins and the entire town, along with everyone in it, gets hosed down.
