Classical celebrations in Poland

12 Jul 2007

From 3 to 11 August, the small Polish spa town of Duszniki Zdroj will host the largest and oldest festival dedicated to the work and life of classical composer Frederic Chopin.

The festival was created in 1946 to celebrate the Polish composer's stay in the town 120 years earlier. Although he was only a boy at the time, the prodigious pianist's talents were already apparent and he gave two charity concerts during his stay in the town, donating all the proceeds to local orphans.

Every August, music lovers from all over the world gather to recognise and celebrate Chopin's compositions. More than 25 concerts are performed over the course of nine days by world class musicians and master classes are taught by the most respected pianists.

This year, Olga Kern, Alexander Kobrin, Joanna Domanska, Yeol-eum Son, Rachel Cheung and Tatiana Kolesova will be among the many artists performing Chopin's compositions and evening recitals.

Duszniki Zdroj is situated in the valley of the Stolowe Mountains National Park and is furnished by many relaxing natural spas and a number of scenic walking trails.
