Edinburgh festival season gets underway

26 Jul 2007

The Military Tattoo, Fringe, Film, Jazz and Book festivals make Edinburgh one of the most exciting festival cities in the world during August.

The Scottish capital's annual arts frenzy centres around one event above all though. The International Festival, first held in 1947, which fills the city with the finest classical music, opera theatre and dance for three weeks at the end of every summer.

The festival is of worldwide repute, and attracts the best theatre, opera and ballet companies, orchestras and classical artists from all over the globe to the 'Athens of the North'.

With the celebration this year of the 400th anniversary of the first operatic masterpiece, Monterverdi's Orfeo, a production of the Orpheus legend by Spanish director Jordi Savall and his group Hesperion XXI sums up the spirit of the 2007 performance.

New York's avant-garde playwright Lee Breuer, the Scottish Ballet and the renowned Cologne Opera will also be performing from 10 August to 2 September.
