Spain builds 'human pyramids'

From 1 to 8 September, the Spanish town of Algemesi stages its largest festival, and one of the most notable in the whole province of Valencia.
The Fiesta de La Virgen de La Salud is a celebration, literally, of the 'Virgin of Good Health' and features masses, processions, dancing, music, fine foods and finer wines.
What makes the festival particularly unique though, is the Human Pyramid Festival that closes festivities on 8 September. On this day, acrobats from across the region descend upon the small town, forming impressive towers of bodies.
Human towers, or 'castalleres', have a great history in Spain, particularly in the provinces of Valencia. This tradition originated towards the end of the eighteenth century in Catalonia, where it is taken very seriously, before spreading southwards.
The Human Pyramid Festival at Algemesi is one of the finest examples of this charming and unique Spanish tradition.
