English Heritage puts on Wartime 'Weekend Spectacular'
7 Aug 2007
England's historic environment management and protection agency, English Heritage, will be organising a World War II themed 'Weekend Spectacular' in Wiltshire at the end of this month.
On the bank holiday weekend which runs from 25 to 27 August, visitors will be able to see what life was really like for the brave soldiers fighting in the war and the men and women that were left to maintain the home front.
Emily Burns, head of events for English Heritage, said: 'This isn't display-case history, this is all about living the moment. Children can play the games of the period, parents and grandparents can dance to the big band tunes and everyone can taste, hear and see life as it was during World War II complete with Spitfires and Hurricanes.'
Old Sarum, the site of the weekend's festivities was situated right next to an RAF airbase that was attacked by German bombers during the war.
English Heritage's remits include conserving and enhancing the historic environment of the country, widening public access to more than 400 sites and increasing people's understanding of the past.
