Stansted airport wearing green

The UK's third largest airport, Stansted serves almost 25 million passengers every year, but it is taking steps to ensure that operations remain as environmentally friendly as possible, according to local newspaper The Herald.
Although passenger numbers rose by 1.6 million since the previous year, Stansted has cut its carbon emissions by 60 tonnes, while 2,000 staff signed up for a care share scheme saving an estimated 45,000 litres of fuel and 108,000kg of carbon dioxide every month.
Solar panels are also used to light the road signs leading to and from the airport at night. Meanwhile, the airport recycles 25% of all waste and aims to increase this number to 40% by 2010. It is also working to reduce noise pollution created by planes taking off and landing.
Stewart Wingate, managing director of the airport, told the newspaper: 'Corporate responsibility means managing our impacts by enhancing the positive and minimising the negative, delivering a safe and secure airport environment for all passengers, staff and companies here.'
