Da Vinci exhibition in Brussels

16 Aug 2007

To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, Brussels has collected on of the most complete exhibitions on one of the greatest thinkers of the Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci.

The exhibition, Leonardo - The European Genius, will run from the end of August and last until 15 March 2008 at the Koekelberg Basillica, the fifth largest church in the world and the largest Art Deco building ever constructed.

It will be divided into four separate themes – Leonardo the man, Leonardo the artist, Leonardo the engineer and Leonardo the humanist – serving to highlight every different aspect of his work and the legacy that he left behind to Renaissance art and science, through to the modern day.

Original works including the Codex of the Flight of Birds and Leonardo's only self portrait, as well as the Tongerlo copy of the Last Supper painted 20 years after Leonardo completed the original, will all be on display during the exhibition.

On the more technical side, the exhibition will also feature 45 working models based on the master's designs and all built to scale, including a 20 metre swing bridge that has never before been built.

Unlike many, Leonardo achieved such fame during his life that he was given the patronage of the King of France in his later years and was said to have died in the monarchs arms.
