Airline seeks travel insurance changes

21 Aug 2007

Ryanair is pushing for industry-wide change in the way that travel insurance is calculated, so that premiums are based on the performance of individual airlines.

The carrier claims its customers are being unfairly penalised when they take insurance against lost luggage and cancelled flights, arguing that its lower rate of problems mean its customers are a lower insurance risk and should pay less.

Ryanair has written to the Association of British Insurers calling for change, claiming that it only loses 0.4 bags per 1,000 flyers, compared to 28 for British Airways.

'For years, the car insurance industry has provided discounts for low risk categories such as women drivers and the over-30s. The time has now come for passengers flying with airlines that deliver the best customer service to enjoy the same discounts,' said Ryanair's Peter Sherrard.

'Ryanair calls on the insurance industry to take a new look at travel insurance. The statistics prove that airlines are far from equal, yet insurers do not differentiate.'

British Airways also scored lowest in Ryanair's figures for planes arriving on time, with a reported success rate of just 64%; according to Ryanair its competitor easyJet does not offer figures on missing bags and flight completions.
