Gappers urged to consider personal safety

22 Aug 2007

With the academic year now officially over and the summer months well underway, students all over Europe will be preparing for a year abroad. While many devote a lot of time to planning the ideal trip, a large number of soon-to-be travellers are failing to consider their own safety.

That is according to specialist gap year cover provider Ace, which found that almost half a gap year travellers taking out a policy did so in the week before travel, while 10% of those policies sold in July 2007 taken out the day before take off.

The specialist insurer found that women aged between 18 and 24 take out a policy 24 days before departure on average, compared with 19 days for their male counterparts.

Ges Lonsdale, business development manager at Ace, explained: 'It's concerning that almost half of all Ace policy holders don't take out insurance until a week before they travel. It's almost certain that, but this late stage, travellers will be committed to a range of costs which would not be recoverable.'

According to insurer American Express, one in four gap year travellers have had a bad experience, with medical, lost luggage, cancellation and curtailment claims the most numerous.
