Vienna stages literary showcase

22 Aug 2007

On 21 and 22 September, the Rum um die Burg, a 24 hour literary festival held in Austria's capital city Vienna, will bring together the country's best authors to read from their works around the clock in an ambitious celebration of the word.

In past years, the festival has consisted of a mixture of classic German language pieces and exciting contemporary works, with authors open to discussion after their readings and most joining the crowd to listen to others read.

The readings take place in a large marquee outside of the iconic Burgtheatre. Designed and constructed in 1888 a design by famous architects Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer, the theatre holds dramas each year from September until July and has a reputation for staging controversial modern takings on classical pieces.

Widely regarded as one of the most important literary festivals in Europe, those with a love for all forms of printed media should not miss Rund um dieBurg for all the world
