Virgin Atlantic benefits from miserable British summer

23 Aug 2007

Torrential downpours in the UK have prompted thousands of British passengers to jet off with Virgin Atlantic, the airline has revealed today.

The transatlantic carrier expects to transport 25 per cent more passengers this coming August Bank Holiday when compared to the same weekend last year. Interestingly, the Met Office now expects the weather to perk up over the weekend, but some 90,000 passengers have already booked tickets with Virgin Atlantic to a variety of US cities.

Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco are the most popular destinations for weather-beaten Brits, but Nairobi and Johannesburg have also attracted holidaymakers.

According to a statement from the company, the guaranteed sunshine of Dubai has also proved a tempting prospect.

Steve Ridgway, chief executive of Virgin Atlantic, observed: 'August Bank Holiday is traditionally a time when many opt for a holiday but this year's disappointing weather has meant that more Britons than ever are flocking to far-flung destinations worldwide in search of summer sun.'

Sir Richard Branson, president of the airline, has also spoken this week about the Flying Without Fear course, which has been taking place at a number of airports.

'Over ten million people in the UK alone have a fear of flying. Since the course began ten years ago, we have had some amazing results with a success rate in excess of 98 per cent,' he said.
