British beaches have good water quality
28 Aug 2007
Nearly all British beaches (85%) has a good standard of water quality, according to a new study by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), despite the pollution caused by recent storms and flooding.
Of the 533 tested bathing areas, only 16 failed to meet legal water quality standards, however the society warned holidaymakers not to swim in the sea until at least 24 hours after severe rain or flooding.
Thomas Bell, MCS coastal pollution officer, said: 'The vast majority of Britain's beaches have taken the brunt of this summer's wet weather exceptionally well.'
Over the bank holiday weekend, beachside towns such as Brighton, Bournemouth and Blackpool proved to be favourite destinations among 29 per cent of Britons who decided to get away for a short break, according to the AA.
It found that a third of Brits planned to drive at least 77 miles away for the August break, eager to make the most of the good weather that has been in short supply this summer.
