Cycling holidays proving increasingly popular
28 Aug 2007
The popularity of cycling-based holidays has soared by as much as 30% over the past two years, new figures from Mintel have revealed.
Approximately 450,000 cycling holidays were taken last year, with a number of tour operators reporting strong growth in an industry now worth £120m in the UK.
However, the study revealed that the number of people actually participating in cycling activities during their break was actually closer to 2.25m.
Richard Cope, a spokesperson for Mintel, commented: 'Although fly and flop still dominates the mass market, many well-travelled and well-off consumers are growing bored with sun worship and are seeking more active experiences.
'Britain is becoming a nation of cycling enthusiasts. Cycling has been given a new lease of life by recent environmental issues, such as sustainable transport, carbon emissions and eco travel.'
Those who enjoy cycling abroad can now get the most from the French capital of Paris, as the city recently started a new scheme, 'ParisVelib', that allows people to pick up a bike from one of the stands, ride it along short trips and drop it at one of the many destinations throughout the city for free.
