More Brits than ever are taking short breaks to the continent in a bid to gain a temporary reprieve from the gloomy British summer, according to new research from a leading travel website.
The research revealed that the southern Mediterranean is particularly popular among British tourists, while Italian capital Rome has witnessed a 170% rise in the number of Brits visiting this year and Spanish capital Madrid has seen a similar rise of 124%. Athens and Venice have also enjoyed rises, of 106% and 58% respectively.
'This trend confirms how upset Britons are that there was no summer in the UK this year,' the website explained. 'Following the beautiful days we had in 2006, a lot of people decided to holiday at home or stay in the UK to enjoy the country and its best, and now want to go way to catch a glimpse of summer whilst they still can.'
According to a recent survey by YouGov on behalf of Holiday Inn, as many as 1.8m workers in the UK took less than half of their annual leave this year, leaving many stressed out and unproductive.
