Cycling holidays grow 100%

31 Aug 2007

Travellers looking to explore the world on two wheels have almost doubled over the last 12 months, according to adventure holiday operators, Intrepid Travel.

The company said that its most popular cycling destination was Vietnam, closely followed by China, while Rajasthan was the fasted growing cycling destination, experiencing growth of over 160% in the last year.

Daniel Pawlyn, a spokesperson for Intrepid, explained that the rise was down to eco-conscious holidaymakers looking for new experiences without leaving a large carbon footprint.

'More and more people in the UK are swapping their car keys for a bicycle lock in order to become more eco-friendly and this change in attitude has had a significant impact on holiday choice,' he explained.

'Exploring a country by bike allows travellers to have the freedom to explore, interact with locals, go off the beaten track and enjoy real life experiences that they wouldn’t get if travelling by car or train.'

Last week, Mintel released research which indicated that 2.25m Brits participated in cycling activities while abroad last year. Since its launch in Paris last month, the city's free cycling programme has also proved immensely popular, showing the changing mentality of people across Europe.
