Elephant enthusiasts trek to Thailand

13 Sep 2007

Travellers who fancy the idea of seeing a completely unique spectacle should start planning their trips to Thailand soon to attend the annual elephant round-up.

Now an event of international renown, this show takes place in Surin's Sri Narong stadium and involves over 100 trained elephants.

Among the attractions on show are elephant football, tug-of-war between elephants and humans and a parade of the immense animals sporting attire reminiscent of medieval warfare.

The main event takes place on Saturday, but there is entertainment for visitors all week, with a market outside the stadium taking place every day and a parade organised through the streets of Surin.

Friday traditionally sees the elephant breakfast - the biggest mass feeding of these magnificent mammals anywhere in the world, with streets lined with food for the animals to munch on.

The main shows this year take place on the weekend of 17 and 18 November.
