Wellington cements culinary reputation
24 Sep 2007
Wellington has justified its reputation as New Zealand's culinary capital with a triple award win, Tourism New Zealand has announced.
The city won three of the seven accolades presented every year by Cuisine magazine, including the 'best fine dining' award, which went to restaurant Martin Bosley's.
Wellington's Pravda Cafe was named the best spot for casual dining in a metropolitan area, while the city's Bistro Breton, Copita and Logan Brown were also among the finalists in their categories.
Auckland also appears to be a good place for a bite to eat, with the city's Soto Japanese Garden victorious in the 'best ethnic or themed restaurant' category and the 'best wine experience' award going to the O'Connell Street Bistro.
Wellington is the world's southernmost capital and, with over 300 restaurants, bars and cafes, has more eateries per head than New York.
The centre of the city is only two kilometres in diameter, meaning that visitors can walk from one side to the other in less than half an hour.
