Asia Pacific destinations break records in '06

Tourism in the Asia Pacific region enjoyed unprecedented success in 2006, with a number of destinations boasting 'best-ever' performances, it has been announced.
The Pacific Asia Travel Association (Pata) said that there were nearly 356m international trips to its member destinations last year, representing region-wide growth of 5.3% on 2005.
Chile was among the destinations that achieved record tourism numbers, while India, Pakistan, China, Japan and Cambodia broke their previous records in Asia, as did Australia, Hawaii and New Zealand in the Pacific.
John Koldowski, director of the Pata strategic intelligence centre, said that the 2006 calendar year was 'very successful' in terms of international visitor arrivals (IVAs) in the Asia Pacific region.
He added: 'Since 2002, IVAs to and within Asia Pacific have grown at an average annual rate of 6.2%.
'Assuming no external shocks, Pata forecasts continued positive performance, at least in the medium-term.'
Mr Koldowski revealed that the Asia Pacific region has already attracted 13.8m more IVAs this year than in the same period of 2006 and could see up to 380m arrivals before the year is out.
