Carbon offsetting 'has big future'

26 Sep 2007

Carbon offsetting, the process whereby companies give their customers the opportunity to make their own carbon saving, has a big future, it has been claimed.

According to Carbon Clear, the pressure that firms are under to reduce their emissions has been growing in recent years.

The company, which helps organisations develop and implement carbon management strategies, said that offsetting allows businesses to achieve "real, lasting emissions reductions".

Offsetting is seen as an effective way for companies to immediately reduce their impact on the environment while they work on long-term, internal changes to their business.

Jamal Gore, managing director of Carbon Clear, said: 'I think there's a huge future for voluntary carbon offsetting. Climate scientists say that excess carbon emissions will total 70 billion tonnes by 2050.

'Current international treaties will only address a small fraction of this so we need a huge amount of investment in emissions reductions around the world and carbon trading - offsetting - is an effective way to make this happen.'
