Emerging destinations 'to harness media power'

26 Sep 2007

Representatives from emerging tourist destinations hoping to utilise the power of the media to attract as many visitors as possible to their regions are attending an international conference this week.

Tourism officials from 37 countries are taking part in a two-day meeting with international and local media representatives as part of a conference in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi.

Over 200 participants are attending the conference, which was organised by the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and the government of Georgia, including journalists from newspapers and agencies across the world.

Francesco Frangialli, UNWTO secretary-general, said: 'The relationship between tourism and the media is vital and complex.

'Tourism is highly dependant on media reporting because the vast majority of travel decisions are made by people who have never seen the destination first-hand for themselves.'

Use of the internet and new communication technologies as well as the development of public-private tourism partnerships will be among the issues considered at the conference.
