Air New Zealand plans biofuel demo

1 Oct 2007

Air New Zealand has reached an agreement with plane manufacturer Boeing and engine maker Rolls-Royce to conduct a biofuel demonstration flight.

The initiative is designed to support the development of biofuel – an energy source derived from organic matter or natural waste – and other sustainable alternative fuels for use in commercial aviation.

Boeing is in talks with suppliers across the world that can offer stocks of biofuel that are sustainable and also in compliance with aviation requirements.

Air New Zealand plans to make the flight using a Boeing 747-400 with Rolls Royce engines in the second half of 2008.

Rob Fyfe, chief executive of the airline, said: 'This test flight is another step in our plan to lead the globe in development of the most environmentally responsible airline.

'We have already taken large steps toward this goal by introducing fuel-efficient Boeing 777s and we eagerly await the first of our 787-9 Dreamliners, which will burn 20% less fuel than the planes they replace.'

Air New Zealand will receive its first 787-9, which will reportedly offer quieter takeoffs and landings as well as lower carbon emissions, in 2010.
