Chennai celebrates music and dance

9 Oct 2007

The city of Chennai will host one of India's biggest events in December - the Dance & Music Festival.

This celebration of the classical music and dance associated with south India will be held from mid-December to mid-January at a number of venues around the city.

A number of famous artists from various parts of India will perform in auditoriums, well-known temples and heritage bungalows.

The festival has been a tradition since 1927 and is held to mark the Tamil month of Marghazi, which is a sacred month to Hindus and embraces classical music as a way of worshipping and showing devotion to the gods.

Over 2,000 participants regularly take part in this cultural extravaganza and over 300 concerts are held, sparking a buzz of excitement and activity around the city.

Performances will include a range of musical forms, using such instruments as the flute; the veena, a large string instrument; the nagaswaram, a pipe; and a percussion instrument called the thavil.

There will also be both solo and group dance shows by junior and senior performers.
