Brits make more trips abroad in past year

17 Oct 2007

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released figures showing that the number of trips abroad by Britons has gone up by around 1.5% in the past year.

Some 69.6m foreign holidays were taken by people from the UK in the year ending August 2007, compared to 68.6m in the previous 12-month period.

The steepest increase in travel was to destinations outside Europe and the US, with ten million people travelling to such locations, seven% more than in the preceding year.

Travel within the continent is still the most popular option with Brits however, with 54.8m European trips in the year to August, representing a 1% rise.

The number of holidays to North America rose by a similar degree to reach 4.8m.

Welcoming the ONS figures, president of the Association of British Travel Agents, Jason Fleming, said: 'Our love affair with foreign travel is in fine shape.

'Europe is still our number one destination but we are increasingly looking to visit other parts of the world.'
