Spending the night in an old building that is reputedly haunted may not be many people's idea of a relaxing break, but for those thrill seekers who like the idea of scaring themselves silly, a guide to America's 'haunted hotels' has been released.
Earlier this month the US National Trust's Historic Hotels of America group published a list of establishments around the country that are home to some 'permanent residents'.
Among them is the Admiral Fell Inn in Baltimore, where in May this year a scientist attending a nearby lecture reported seeing a tall woman dressed in a black skirt and red sash who appeared to check on an invisible occupant of another bed in the room.
She has come to be known as the night-shift nurse.
In the Driskill Hotel in Austin, Texas occupants have reported hearing sounds of a ball bouncing down a staircase and a young girl laughing.
These spooky occurrences are said to have their roots way back in 1887, when the daughter of a Texas senator tragically died while chasing a ball down the hotel's staircase.
Dozens of other reports have been given of eerie goings-on around America and those courageous enough can go looking for the woeful widow in Texas' Hotel Galvez or solemn John, a businessman who reportedly took his own life in the 1930s, in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans.
