See the launch of one of Australia's major events

22 Oct 2007

Australia is well known for its love of sport and people visiting Sydney this Christmas will have the opportunity to join the locals as they watch one of the country's major events get underway.

On December 26th the 62nd yacht race from Sydney to Hobart will launch and competitors will travel from the Sydney Harbour, across the Tasman Sea to Hobart in south-east Tasmania.

This event has developed into a strong Boxing Day tradition in Australia and has become as popular as occasions such as the Melbourne Cup and the Ashes.

In 1945, when the first Sydney-Hobart yacht race took place, just nine competitors were involved and the race lasted over six days.

Up to 80 vessels compete in the race these days and the winning time is usually less than 48 hours.

Many people gather every year to watch the launch and Sydney offers a number of excellent vantage points from which to see the yachts set off on their journey.
