Desert tourism expected to flourish

Desert tourism in southern African countries is expected to thrive following progress in the region's travel infrastructure.
Recent initiatives have included the openings of the Sendelingsdrift and Mata-Mata border posts connecting Namibia and South Africa, New Era reports.
These new connections are expected to make it easier for tourists visiting the Ai-Ais national park in Namibia and the Richtersveld park in South Africa to travel between the two.
Willem Konjore, Namibia's minister of environment and tourism, recently opened a traditional pontoon on the Orange River at Sendelingsdrift and said that such developments help strengthen transfrontier park initiatives.
'With the opening of the pontoon, it is no longer necessary to exit the park as it is now possible to travel across the border within the transfrontier park between South Africa and Namibia, to experience the wonders of this magnificent area,' Mr Konjore said.
Beyond the Orange River, visitors to Namibia can visit the Fish River Canyon, the world's second largest canyon, and the Namib desert.
