Year of sport to entertain Valencia visitors

23 Nov 2007

The Spanish province of Valencia will host a number of sporting events next year to keep its visitors and residents entertained.

Following its successful hosting of the 32nd America's Cup sailing contest this year, Valencia will hold four major competitive events in 2008, starting with the Athletics World Indoor Championships on 7 March.

This competition will take place at the Palau Velodromo Luis Puig in Valencia, which holds 6,000 spectators, and a number of bars around the city will show the action on screens.

In the peak summer holiday month of August, Valencia will host its first European Grand Prix.

This new addition to the Formula One calendar will be held on 24 August and will see cars racing along an urban circuit on Valencia's seafront, watched by some 150,000 spectators in the surrounding stands.

On 4 October the launch of the Volvo Ocean Race will take place in Alicante before the Motorcycling Grand Prix revs into life at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Cheste.

Valencia is a province in eastern Spain with a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea and borders shared by Alicante, Castellon, Albacete and others.
