Holidaymakers 'flocking to the Cape'

17 Dec 2007

Tourists are heading to the Western Cape region of South Africa, and the city of Cape Town, in their droves, according to reports.

One of the most popular attractions has been the old town at Kimberley's Big Hole precinct, according to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The Big Hole is a huge open-pit mine in Kimberley, which was dug by 50,000 miners between the years of 1866 and 1914, yielding over 2,700kg of diamonds.

About 1,000 local and international tourists reportedly visit the location every day during the South African summer season, which includes the Christmas holiday. Many of these people head to the nearby Old Town to learn some of the history of the area.

Another point to which many visitors gravitate is the Western Cape's Fynbos, an area of natural shrubland which is considered to be one of only six floral kingdoms in the world.

Some 750 vehicles an hour enter the Western Cape, according to research cited by SABC News, with between 100 and 200 headed for Cape Town.
