The year 2008 will be another exciting and progressive period for the travel industry, as people are encouraged by films, sport and culture to discover the world, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
In its predictions for next year, the group said that Love in the Time of Cholera, a film based in the South American city of Cartagena, will 'put Colombia back on the map of must-see destinations'.
The Cup, a movie starring Pierce Brosnan and Nicole Kidman, is expected to further boost the popularity of Australia, while new TV show The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is set to increase the exposure of Botswana.
China will continue to enjoy success in 2008, according to Abta, partly owing to the Terracotta Warriors exhibit at the British Museum and the Olympic Games in the summer.
Singapore is expected to welcome more tourists as it hosts the first Formula One night race on 28 September, while France will welcome an influx of visitors to mark the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
Justin Fleming, president of Abta, said: 'Travelling is always an inspiring way of spending our free time and with so many exciting events and enticing destinations, our enthusiasm for overseas holidays in 2008 remains high.'
