Big year ahead for Dubai Sports City

4 Jan 2008

Dubai Sports City, the cornerstone project of the Dubailand complex, has said that it is prepared for 2008, which is set to be a landmark period for the centre.

The coming year will see some elements of the £2bn project, which claims to be the world's first city dedicated to sport, opened to the public for the first time.

One of the first attractions to open will be the 72-par, 18-hole championship golf course designed by South African sportsman Ernie Els, which will host a number of inaugural events in January.

A hockey arena will open its doors and is planned to host an international tournament at some time in the future, while local cricket will also be boosted by the opening of a 25,000-seat stadium.

Khalid Al Zarooni, president of Dubai Sports City, said: 'A new year always brings with it new challenges, new opportunities and a sense of excitement about the coming months ahead.

'Whereas many people often use this season as an opportunity to reflect on times past, Dubai Sports City is firmly fixed on the future.'
