Unusual locations 'becoming popular for city breaks'

9 Jan 2008

As Valentine's Day approaches the city break market will be rising in popularity, with a range of destinations attracting interest, according to an industry spokesman.

A member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) said that city breaks are by far the most popular option for people wishing to travel abroad for Valentine's Day.

The spokesman said that while the 'old favourites' such as Paris, Rome and Venice are always popular, less mainstream destinations are also beginning to rise in prominence.

'Even Reykjavik is quite popular,' he said. 'It's a little bit off the beaten track…people want to do something a little bit different – they are so well travelled at this point, they have done a lot of the major cities.'

Iceland's capital is one of the emerging destinations in the city break market, the AITO spokesman said, and is not yet a rival for the likes of Paris and Rome.

The Moroccan city of Marrakech was also identified as a location that is doing well, although it is slightly further away from the UK than most city break locations.
