Dubai airport 'growing faster than any other'

10 Jan 2008

The popularity of Dubai as a tourist destination has led to the emirate's international airport growing faster than any other world travel hub, according to new figures.

A record 34.34m international passengers travelled through Dubai International airport last year, the hub's operator said.

This is a 19% increase on 2006, when Dubai handled 28.78m travellers and was ranked tenth on the Airports Council International's list of the world's busiest air bases.

The airport has now seen an average growth rate of over 15% for the past six consecutive years.

August was the busiest month of all last year, with a total of 3.28m passengers, while October recorded the highest growth rate at 29.9%.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman of the Dubai Airports group, said: 'Dubai International's growth is a reflection of Dubai's robust economy and its rising popularity as an international commercial and tourism hub.

'It is also a clear sign of our intent and vision for the future of the aviation sector in Dubai.'
